Introducing the SCIGRIP® SG3000 Galv Bonder: Structural Bonding for Galvanized Steel — Without the Primer

Galvanized steel is one of the most widely used materials in modern manufacturing and construction — and one of the hardest surfaces to bond reliably. Until now.

SCIGRIP is proud to announce the launch of the SG3000 Galv Bonder: a high-strength, toughened two-component methacrylate adhesive engineered specifically for the structural bonding of galvanized and zinc-coated steels. No primer required, minimal surface preparation and high strength performance.

The Problem with Bonding Galvanized Steel

Galvanized steel is everywhere. From trucks and trailers to wind turbines, marine structures, and construction cladding — the corrosion resistance of zinc coating makes it an essential material across dozens of industries. But that same zinc layer has always been the enemy of adhesive bonding.

Traditional approaches demand surface primers, chemical pretreatments, or labour-intensive mechanical abrasion before an adhesive can get a grip. Each extra step adds cost, slows throughput, and introduces potential for inconsistency on the production line.

The SG3000 was developed to solve this problem at source.

What Makes SG3000 Different?

The SG3000 bonds directly to zinc-coated substrates — including hot-dipped galvanized steel, electro-galvanized steel, and roll-formed zinc-coated profiles — without any surface primer or chemical pretreatment. That means fewer process steps, faster assembly, and a cleaner workflow from day one.

Structural-Grade Bond Strength

This isn’t a light-duty or gap-filling adhesive. The SG3000 delivers:

  • Lap shear strength >20 MPa on galvanized steel substrates
  • Tensile strength >35 MPa — among the highest in its class
  • Cohesive failure modes on aluminium, stainless steel, and galvanized steel, confirming the adhesive outperforms the substrate itself
  • A service temperature range of -40°C to 90°C, suitable for extreme field environments

Multi-Material Capability

SG3000 isn’t limited to metal-to-metal bonding. It’s formulated to bond galvanized steel to a wide range of substrates including:

Aluminium · Stainless Steel · Cold Rolled Steel · FRP/GRP
Composites · Acrylic · Polycarbonates · Coated Metals · Vinyl/PVC · Gelcoat · ABS

This makes it an ideal solution for the complex mixed-material assemblies increasingly common across transportation, energy, marine, and agricultural manufacturing — including composite gate production and specialist vehicle bodywork.

Controlled Working Time for Complex Assemblies

With a working time of 5-10 minutes and a fixture time of 10-16 minutes at 24°C, the SG3000 gives assemblers the time needed to position and adjust components before cure — without sacrificing throughput. Its excellent flow at low pressure ensures consistent coverage without specialist dispensing equipment.

Simple 1:1 Mix Ratio

The 1:1 mix ratio makes SG3000 straightforward to dispense from standard 50 and 400ml cartridges for manual applications, as well as from 19-litre pails and 189-litre drums for high-volume metered-mix systems.

Where Can SG3000 Be Used?

The SG3000 has been validated for structural adhesion across six primary application sectors:

Transportation & Vehicles – Bonding galvanized structural members to composites and mixed-metal assemblies in trucks, trailers, and specialist vehicles — replacing welding and mechanical fasteners in high-vibration environments.

Composite Sheeting & Cladding Panels – Structural bonding of galvanized support framing to composite and coated metal cladding panels for architectural and industrial applications.

GRP/FRP Tank Assembly – Attaching galvanized metal brackets, feet, and fixings to GRP water treatment tanks — eliminating the need for drilling or welding.

Energy — Wind – Bonding galvanized mounting hardware and brackets to FRP/composite turbine nacelles and support structures, where long-term reliability under environmental stress is critical.

Marine & Offshore – Bonding galvanized fittings, handrails, and brackets to GRP hulls and deck structures in harsh saltwater environments, where corrosion resistance and bond integrity are non-negotiable.

Composite & Galvanized Gates – Bonding galvanized steel frames and reinforcements to composite gate panels — delivering the strength and weather resistance required for agricultural, equestrian, and security gate applications without welding or mechanical fixings.

Van Body Conversions & Coachbuilding – Structural bonding of galvanized steel subframes, reinforcements, and fixings to composite and GRP body panels across LCV conversions, box van bodies, and horsebox coachbuilding. SG3000 eliminates the need for drilling and riveting, preserving panel integrity and producing a cleaner, more durable finish.

Sign & Display – Attaching galvanized frames and fixings to acrylic, ABS, and composite sign panels without the need for mechanical fasteners or drilling.

The Bottom Line

“Galvanized steel is everywhere — in transportation, infrastructure, renewable energy, and marine applications — but bonding it reliably has always come with a significant process overhead. SG3000 changes that.”Scott McDowell, President, IPS Adhesives

The SG3000 Galv Bonder represents a genuine step forward for fabricators, assemblers, and OEMs working with zinc-coated substrates. By eliminating the primer requirement without compromising on structural performance, it delivers real savings in time, materials, and process complexity — while meeting the strength demands of the most challenging applications.
